Film language-Lighting

Photo 1:
This photo is a colour image of a woman holding a cigarette and dressed sophisticatedly, the audience will know this woman is a femme-fatale and her character is associated with the film noir genre. The use of the low-key lighting creates shadows around the woman as if she is shrouded in mystery but also creates a contrast of light and dark on her face which suggests that there are two different sides to her character. There is also quite a strong contrast between the room she is in and the cigarette smoke at the front of the image, furthermore the smoke seems to be surrounding her and again as a femme fatale she is enveloped by mystery but also deception.

Photo 2:
The lighting here is low-key as many shadows are created and there is no natural lighting. Furthermore top lighting is also used and this presents the female as more glamourous and the only part of her body that is illuminated is her face so lighting -wise there is a lot of emphasis on it suggesting she is really significant character.

Photo 3:
High key lighting is used in this photo and you can see this because the photo does not look artificial but more realistic. Also top lighting is used to highlight the features on the characters face and show his seriousness. Also shadows are created around his face so we cannot fully see who he is which adds a sense of mystery.

Photo 4:
The use of low key lighting creates lots of shadows around the man and contrasts from light to dark especially with one side of his face being in the light and the other dark and one hand in the dark and the other in the light and revealing a revolver. This adds a sense of danger and uncertainty to the mans mental state.

Photo 5:
This photo uses high-key lighting and there are some shadows but the woman is clearly seen with a scared look on her face made obvious by the underlighting which is commonly used in horror films.
The shadows against the back wall suggest the woman is trapped and that there is nowhere else to run.

Photo 6:
High key lighting is used in this photo as there is natural light coming in from the window on the right which makes the moment in the picture appear more realistic. Also with the shadow of the blinds covering the peoples faces this suggests its a private and intense moment.

Photo 7:
This photo uses low-key lighting and all of the characters have large shadows extending forwards also this photo uses back lighting which makes the characters appear as spectres and the scene looks ominous. This creates a sense of danger.

Photo 8:
This photo use low-key lighting as there are shadows against the wall and a strong contrast of the corners being black and the centre of the image is brighter where the woman is. Underlighting is also used which is normally used in horror films to create a distorted effect.

Photo 9:
This photo uses high-key lighting as it is more natural, this also uses top lighting as the woman appears bright and seems to have a glow around her, furthermore the top lighting is significant because she has her hands shaped for prayer and the light resembles light coming from heaven.

Photo 10:
Low-key lighting is used in this photo with a scene from a horror film, there isn't much to see in this photo as it is very dark but the character at the top of the stairs is seen holding a knife which adds to the tension. Natural light is coming in from the window on the left and produces shadows which look like cage bars.

Photo 11:
High-key lighting is being used to show a natural scene, also top lighting is being used to accentuate the features of the two people. Also the light reveals a revolver in the mans hand behind the womans back.

Mise-en-scene

This clip from the Martin Scorsese film Goodfellas features loads of people at a bar around christmas time with 'frosty the snowman' playing in the background. This clip features Jimmy welcoming people in with a smile on his face then when one of the guests shows him the car he just bought the volume of the music begins to go down and Jimmy starts to sweat and the camera shows the rest of the people in the bar have averted their gaze to the argument. Then the music completely stops and the mood changes from being happy and festive to cold and bitter. Another couple emter and a woman is wearing an expensive fur coat,  Jimmy immediately rips it off her, as Jimmy knows that this stuff wiill bring attention to the crime they committed to obtain these items, however Jimmy is bringing more attention to himself by acting paranoid and irrational.

This clip taken from Batman The dark knight, this clip features the joker take control of a kitchen full of gangsters and criminals. Everybody in the room is dressed in smart suits then the joker comes in wearing a purple suit, green hair and makeup on his face so even without speaking all of the attention goes towards him. Also when the joker is being spoken to the camera is looking over his shoulder to the people around him and when he is speaking the camera is looking directly towards him. The facial expressions of the criminals suggest they are becoming increasingly angered by the jokers proposals and stand up to him, and without saying anything the joker unveils a line of explosives in his jacket. This is a threat and the criminals move backwards. Also the facial expressions of the joker suggest he isnt mentally stable and is deeply troubled with his eyes moving around and his licking his lips constantly.
This sci-fi movie 'interstellar' features people landing on another planet which is full of liquid water, at first the background seems to reveal mountains but as the volume and intensity of the music increases the mountains turn out to be giant waves and all of the astronauts make a dash to get back to the ship but it is increasingly hard to run as the gravity is stronger in that planet. This makes the situation more intense as somebody has gotten stuck under some rubble and the waves are closing in.As most of them make it back to the space ship the once calm shallow water has become frenzied and people on board are panicking as suggested by their facial expressions.

This still from the movie white chicks shows the two main characters in a club with low lighting and their facial expressions and body language suggest that they are in disagreement with someone. The make up here is obvious as they are two undercover male agents dressed up as women, however the people around them haven't realised that yet. Also the people around them look shocked, as if theyve said something to the wrong peole, nevertheless they still seem confident. This prompts the audience to think that some kind of 'battle' is about to take place and with this being in a night club a dance battle is about to take place. With this film being a comedy the audience can expect to see something unrealistic but funny.

film language posters.

Harrison Ford blade runner:
Movie appears to be of the sci-fi genre as shown by the interpretation of a modern city and advanced weaponry. The poster also reveals that the film could be about the man with the determined facial expression on a mission of some sort but this could be compromised by the 'femme-fatale' on the right hand side. The target audience would be late teens into adults in their 20's.

Scary movie 2:
Scary movie suggests the movie will be about horror however this is a sequel and the audience would know that this is more of a comedy, this can be shown with the dramatic facial expressions and the characters as one of the 'Wayans' brothers is featured in the background and the audience will make the association between him and comedy. There are also some horror movie 'cliches' with the black cat, the reverend and the psycho at the back.

Uzak:
This film isn't English made but shown in English independent cinemas (art-house) and is shown to be in a harsh and could environment and shows the figure of a man starring off into the distance, this film could be a thriller because there is a lot of uncertainty in the poster as to who the man is and where he is and what he's doing.

Im not scared:
The film poster shows a young boy starring into a hole which could be his fear, the story could involve the boy conquering this fear in order to help a friend who may have fallen into it. The target audience would be children under the age of 10. The genre could be adventure as there are some bright colours and the sky is visible.

Sin city:
This film appears to be an action/thriller with some violence as the characters are seen brandishing hand guns and this could be a binary opposition film as there are people united at the top and a smaller silhouette of a man on his own coming out from the shadows. The target audience would be adults from 18-late 20's.

Pirates of the Caribbean:
A well known adventure film set in different parts of the world where protagonist Johnny Depp is at sea hunting treasure. This is aimed at a teenage and adult audience. The storyline is typical of a pirate movie in which more than one party hunt a treasure chest and the movies title is 'dead mans chest'.

Bride and prejudice:
The film bride and prejudice is an Asian parody of the film 'pride and prejudice' and is a romantic-comedy aimed at people of different ages. The poster suggests there will be a wedding taking  place in India at some stage during the movie, however there will be a struggle to reach that point possibly with family disagreements.

Million dollar baby:
The film mainly includes 3 characters, two older men and a woman and the background is dark suggesting there will be times of hardship and struggle. Also the woman seems in good physical condition and dressed accordingly so this indicates that the film could be sport related and aimed at an older audience 20+ also the genre would be action and thriller.
